Phase 3: Collaboration

Typically October

Teachers find October to be a highly stressful month.  As an Assistant Principal, your job is to be there to support and keep the focus on the important work at hand.  If you haven’t already, this is a great time to begin attending team/department/PLC meetings to provide guidance and support.

Schedule, Job Duties, and Expectations

  • Plan time on your calendar to attend team/department/PLC meetings.
  • Look into professional development opportunities to continue being a lifelong learner.  In the Leadership Weekly, there will always be a page for Talent and Leadership Development with a link to what we call Empower Modules.  Check these out for possible professional development opportunities.  Also check out the Assistant Principal Leadership Development Guide.
  • Have a goal setting meeting with your Principal if you haven’t already done this.

To Do’s in October

  • If you haven’t already discussed the Assistant Principal Role Definition document with your Principal, spend some time looking over this aspirational model and think about goals you may have to work towards the best use of your time in your daily work as an assistant principal.
  • Tend to the social and emotional needs of your staff and take some time for yourself in October.

This can be a very stressful month for teachers. They do not call it “Shocktober” for nothing.
